The Delicate Relationship: Comics and Games

Many would feel that they are a world of difference, and some game players are known to hate comics, they despise them to the point of actually avoiding them, saying that they prefer to stay with the “alive” and play online games, where, at least, the person you are talking to behind the screen isn’t dead.

I have met several people that’s like these in the online world, and I say that they aren’t wrong, they just lack the maturity to accept what others like. Always feeling that whatever they like is the best, and no credit goes to anything other than that.

Truth be told, I despise these people. If they do not understand the delicate balance between games and the manga culture, they should seriously be shot in the head several times. (with rubber bullets of course!) If they can’t be bothered to find out about the delicate balance, then it’s our duty to tell them.

The manga is basically a comic, drawn by the Japanese and have attained a higher level of recognition and made their own art style. Generally called the manga art by many fans in the world, the manga had always brought its readers into a world of semi-reality and enchant them with the magical escapade.

While American comics such as Marvel focus mainly on the bodily structure of both genders, the Manga tend to bias toward the female body, thus creating what people would call the “Barbie doll syndrome”, where the humans portrayed are too beautiful and perfect that a normal human would not be able to achieve.

Thus, whilst keeping the locations and settings of the manga world as close to the real life as possible, they would distort the bodies of the characters such that perfect humans exist, which in turn, creates the illusion of the readers being in a parallel dimension.

Back to the point, the relationship between manga and games is that they are interchangeable. A good manga can be created into a good game, such as a good game created into a movie, and a movie might be better portrayed in text and image forms.

The effect is really heavy in the world of manga, mainly because they are already standing on the same platform, and that is to animate and create everything from scratch. Games work in that way too, the only difference is that they would have to play it out, instead of watching everything animated out nicely for you.

Think about this, if there was not a person who wishes to change the incidents inside a story, or to actually be immersed into a story, there would never have been role playing games in the first place. With the immense world that was created within the game, they would never have thought of implementing multiple main characters.

Thats how Online games really came about. With everyone dreaming to be the main character of their own story, video game industries churn out game after game in which they can choose who to trade with, who to form a team with, and who to socialize with.

So for those people who hates comics out there, but somehow just loves playing games due to it’s high amount of “reality” I really hope someone will come up and shoot you in the head (with rubber bullets of course!) several times, and hopefully be more active in the world that’s slowly revolving around you.

Of course, this brings me to the point where not everything I say is correct, some of the parts inside this post may be false, fabricated, or basically just an opinion from a lowly-ranked member in the society. But to those that hates comics, be it manga or American comics, and games altogether, why not give them a chance, turn to your nearest nerdy friend and ask them about it.

You might even get hooked onto reading or playing them. At that time, you have become a youth once again, hurray, line up here for your free tee-shirt and cat’s ears.

But maybe the real reason why people choose to play games is to feel young about themselves. And those that despise it feel that they have grown out of that stage of sitting down in front of a TV or monitor and playing for at least a back to back of three hours.

I know my mother will freak out when I say that my highest score was 36 hours non-stop. She will start burning my hard-earned collection of game DVDs and scream in pure enjoyment, maybe it’s a cultural gap, maybe its the generation gap, maybe it’s the age gap.

Whatever gap that may be, she considers me abnormal for choosing a gaming course like mine, and my never-fading interest in the world of games. She considers me the “most hardworking gamer in the world”, not knowing that there are people that can go up to 14 days straight in front of their monitors.

Will someone please educate my mother? And tell her that I’m not a freak for playing an average of 4 hours a day. Or the fact that me saving money by eating less everyday just for better computer parts or comics is a totally healthy thing to do?

Besides, I get to slim down, she should be happy about it. At least she did not do anymore crazy notions like “Free incoming call is not free” or “20 dollars a month in video games and comics is totally ridiculous, too expensive.” For your information, she is the kind who loves to spend 50 dollar on food “just for the experience”.

I really need a Chinese speaking teacher to tell her that next round…
